Graduate Mill Training
Welcome to the Graduate mill training. This semi-self guided series of videos and projects will get you up to speed on the CNC milling machines in the Mech-E shop.
FAQ
-
For each module, you will watch a video, reserve a time on a machine, and work on a project in person.
The videos are the same videos students watch in our introduction to machining course.
Most modules have a learning checklist and a part drawing. This checklist should be completed and returned to a member of lab staff before moving on to the next module.
Before your sessions, you’ll check in with a member of lab staff, who can give you all the materials you’ll need.
Staff are always available during your working sessions to answer questions.
-
Usually it takes four to five two-hour sessions to complete the material in the modules.
-
After finishing the training modules, you have to pass a final “Drivers Test” before you can freely use the machines in the shop.
For more details, ask a member of shop staff.
-
Use the lab booking website.
The Mini Mills are under the “Rapid Prototyping” category.
We suggest booking two-hour sessions.
Module #1 - Safety & Introduction
In this short five minute video, Professor Jim Hone introduces the course and covers the required safety and administrative pre-requisites.
Graduate training students must complete the same Lab User Conduct Safety agreement and RASCAL trainings detailed in the video.
Module #2 - Manual Operation
In this video, we cover tooling information, the basic operations of the mini mill and edge finding.
Module #3 - First Part
In this video, we conversationally program the machine to make a part.
Before hitting cycle start, ask a member of lab staff to review your program!
Module #4 - Two Setup Machining
In this video, we cover the topic of feeds and speeds in more detail. We then use a common workholding technique to make a part in two setups.
Before hitting cycle start, ask a member of lab staff to review your program!
